TRANSLATIO STUDIORUM
ANCIENT, MEDIEVAL, AND MODERN BEARERS OF INTELLECTUAL HISTORY

International Society for Intellectual History Conference

Verona, 25th-27th May 2009

«Pleasant Verona! With its beautiful old palaces, and charming country in the distance, seen from terrace walks, and stately, balustraded galleries. With its Roman gates, still spanning the fair street, and casting, on the sunlight of to-day, the shade of fifteen hundred years ago. With its marble-fitted churches, lofty towers, rich architecture, and quaint old quiet thoroughfares, where shouts of Montagues and Capulets once resounded...» Charles Dickens

«There is no world without Verona walls,
But purgatory, torture, hell itself.
Hence-banished is banish'd from the world,
And world's exile is death: then banished,
Is death mis-term'd: calling death banishment,
Thou cutt'st my head off with a golden axe,
And smilest upon the stroke that murders me»
William Shakespeare

Overview:

The University of Verona (Italy) hosts the 10th International Conference of the International Society for Intellectual History. The International Society for Intellectual History was created in 1994 to foster communication and interaction among the international community of intellectual historians and scholars working in related fields. As agreed upon at its founding, the Society will make no attempt to define intellectual history as having only one approach. The Society therefore invites membership from scholars working in such diverse fields as art and music, religion and literature, philosophy, politics, and the sciences. The goal of the Society is two-fold: to bring together scholars working in the field of intellectual history and in related fields; and to provide this international community of scholars with a forum for debating and discussing various approaches to the study of intellectual history.

The previous confrences were hosted Birkbeck College, University of London, 17-20 April 2007; Davis, California, USA, March, 31- April 3, 2005; Helsinki, Finland (July 2004); Istanbul, Turkey (2003); Sydney (2002); Cambridge, England (2001); Chicago (September 2000); Berlin (1998); and New Brunswick, NJ (1997).

The conference theme focuses on eight topics:

1. Methodology of Intellectual History
2. History of the Aristotelian Tradition
3. Dictionaries and Lexica of the Modernity
4. History (or Historiography) of Intellectual History
5. History of Art
6. Ancient and Medieval History
7. Enlightenment
8. Intellectual Identities
9. History of Universities
10. History of Sciences
